Communicate On and Off the Dance Floor
Good communication helps prevent misunderstandings and creates an environment where everyone can feel safe and comfortable.
Our Guidelines
- Use respectful language.
- Wait for an answer before starting a dance.
- Only perform lifts or acrobatic moves with your partner’s prior agreement.
- If you accidentally cross someone’s boundaries, apologize sincerely.
- Anyone can end a dance at any time.
Examples
- Words matter.
Try to use respectful and inclusive language so that as many people as possible feel welcome and included.
- Listen to your dance partner.
Pay attention to both verbal and non-verbal cues. If your dance partner seems unsure or uncomfortable, it’s always okay to check in and ask.
- Apologize when something goes wrong.
While dancing, accidental contact with a sensitive body part, such as someone’s chest. If it does, a sincere apology shows respect and helps avoid misunderstandings. It also reassures the other person that it was unintentional.
- It’s always okay to end a dance.
If you or your dance partner would like to end the dance, that’s completely okay at any time—even before the song is over.
